Habitat for Humanity

When you help build a Habitat home, someone benefits from your efforts every day, year after year.  Not many opportunities to "give back," yield such lasting benefit. Our Ministry’s home builds foster camaraderie and teamwork; a mere side effect of the powerful work we do.  Families are the heart of our mission.  Adult and teenage volunteers make a difference in the lives of families by the work of their hands.  This tangible expression of love makes a difference for generations.

Shelter from wind, rain and cold is a basic human need. Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat houses are purchased by families at prices affordable to low-income Americans, thanks to donated labor of Habitat volunteers, support of partner organizations and the no-profit, no-interest terms of each U.S. Habitat for Humanity mortgage. Through the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem - decent housing for all.

Donating your used materials benefits not only Habitat for Humanity but the community as a whole.

Our ministry was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety. Dozens of volunteers needed! If you like to work with your hands, please help Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County make a difference to a family who does not own a home. You do not need to be an expert handyperson to help out; just be willing to give a few of your Fridays and/or Saturdays from mid-April through early-July. Men, women and teens (16 and older) are welcome to volunteer. There will be many knowledgeable individuals who will be ready to assist you during this project, all while having fun!

Annual Event Hosted by Our Ministry

Working with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County (and usually 2 to 4 other Greenville Area Church's) each spring, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church provides Funding and Volunteers to build a home for a Habitat for Humanity Partner Family to eliminate substandard housing in Greenville County. From early April thru early July - - at a house construction build site from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays on volunteer build days.

On August 5, 2012, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church Habitat Ministry participated in the dedication of the Thompson Family home. This represents the 10th home that St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church has financially sponsored (quarter house partnership) and provided dozens of dedicated parish volunteers (from April to July) to construct this house since the founding of our parish Habitat Ministry in year 2000. But more importantly, our St. Mary Magdalene Habit ministry has now helped 10 families to have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety. The Thompson Family (Jamie and her two sons) are very thankful to St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church for all our dedication in helping to build her home. Jamie’s home is the 303rd home that Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County has built since its first house built in Greenville County back in 1986.
