Alpha Program

When and Where Does Alpha Take Place?

Wednesdays & Fridays in the Parish Center: September 14/16 – November 9/11.
Three separate time tracks: Wednesday & Friday at 6:30 PM; Wednesday at 9:30 AM.
There is also an optional “Alpha Weekend Away” overnight retreat on October 29/30.
For the first time a Spanish session will also run on Friday at 6:30 PM.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a nine week program offering a clean slate to examine the big questions of life as well as the basis of why we have faith - or have an aversion to it.  It helps us hear the claims of Christianity much like the first few generations heard it rather than as a religion, or an institution. What someone believes going into Alpha doesn’t matter.  Alpha welcomes – and in fact thrives – when those who come have very different world views.

Who is Alpha For?

Alpha is for everyone.  It’s powerful for anyone genuinely willing to ask some big questions:

  • What the meaning of my life, or for what’s missing in it?
  • What’s the real basis for my worldview?  For my faith?
  • Could I become someone who makes a real difference in the world?

Alpha logo.jpgWhy is it so successful?

Alpha has exploded in popularity because of its friendly, open and informal approach.  Each session begins with a good meal.  Friends are made, laughter is encouraged.  Then a great video is shown that factually tells a part of the essential story of Christianity - never preaching, simply informing.  Finally, a small group discussion explores the content of the video.  Anything can be asked about the meaning of life and the Christian faith’s claim to that meaning.  Trust, respect and relationships develop.  People come with questions, but leave with much more than answers.

Why haven’t I heard about it before?

The biggest reason is that Alpha didn’t start in the Catholic Church, but in an Anglican church in London more than 20 years ago.  Alpha’s appeal is analogous to the universal appeal of C.S. Lewis (another Anglican) to Christians of every church.  It’s about the core of Christianity, the most important part that we all share.  Hundreds of Catholic parishes in the U.S. have run Alpha, and the trend is growing.
