SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God

without being born of water and Spirit.

John 3:5

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re considering Baptism at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Whether you're preparing to baptize your infant, your older child, or you're exploring the process for godparents, we're here to walk with you.

Baptism is the beginning of a lifelong journey with Jesus Christ. Through Baptism, we are freed from sin, reborn as children of God, and welcomed into the family of the Church. It’s a beautiful and grace-filled moment—and we want to help you prepare well.

Adults Seeking Baptism

Adults who wish to be baptized must attend OCIA. Please contact Deacon Roger at ocia@smmcc.org. or visit our OCIA page for more information.

Baptism for Children Seven and Older

To seek baptism for a child seven and older, the child must attend Christian Formation classes. Class information is available at www.smmcc.org/formation

Baptism for Infants and Children under Seven

Requirements for Baptism

  • At least one parent must be a practicing Catholic and committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.

  • Parents must be registered members of St. Mary Magdalene or receive permission from their home parish.

  • A Baptism Preparation Class is required for both parents and godparents (see below).

  • All necessary paperwork must be submitted and approved before a date for Baptism can be scheduled.

Dates are not confirmed until all requirements are met.

Requirements for Godparents

Godparents play a vital role in the spiritual life of your child. They are witnesses of faith and examples of Christian living.

To be eligible to serve as a godparent, an individual must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Be a fully initiated Catholic (baptized, confirmed, and have received First Communion)

  • Be actively practicing the faith, including regular Sunday Mass attendance

  • Not be the child’s parent

  • If married, be in a valid Catholic marriage (recognized by the Church)

You may choose one godparent or two (one male and one female). A baptized non-Catholic Christian may serve as a Christian witness, but only alongside a Catholic godparent who meets the above requirements.

Required Documents

  • Original (long-form) Birth Certificate

  • Certificate of attendance of Baptismal Class (parents and godparents)

  • If godparents are not registered at St. Magdalene, a letter of good standing from their home parish.

  • If godparents are registered, proof of receipt of any sacrament (for name verification).

  • Documents must be brought directly to our parish office.

Baptism Preparation Class

A Baptism Preparation Class is required for both parents and godparents.

This class explores the meaning of the sacrament, the promises being made, and how to grow together in faith as a family. It’s a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, connect with our parish, and deepen your understanding of your role.

If you have any questions, please email sacraments@smmcc.org.
